The Case of Xia Zhengshu Assassinating Duke Ling of Chen

In 599 BCE, Duke Ling of Chen and his ministers Kong Ning and Yi Xingfu carried on an illicit affair with Xia Ji, the widow of a deceased official and mother of Xia Zhengshu. Openly mocking the situation, they joked in Xia Zhengshu's presence that he resembled all three of them. Enraged by the humiliation, Xia Zhengshu ambushed and killed Duke Ling, then declared himself the ruler of Chen. Kong Ning and Yi Xingfu fled to the neighboring state of Chu and appealed to King Zhuang. Citing the punishment of regicide as justification, King Zhuang of Chu led a punitive expedition against Chen. The Chu army captured Xia Zhengshu and publicly executed him by chariot dismemberment (chelie). Chen was briefly annexed as a Chu province, but after a minister's remonstration, King Zhuang restored the Chen state and enthroned Duke Ling's son as Duke Cheng.

Xia Zhengshu was captured by Chu forces and executed by being tied to chariots and torn apart. The state of Chen was temporarily extinguished and incorporated into Chu, but soon restored as a vassal state under Duke Cheng of Chen.

The legitimacy of Xia Zhengshu's revenge for personal humiliation versus the sacrosanct nature of a ruler's life under Zhou feudal order; whether Chu's military intervention was a righteous act of punishing regicide or a pretext for territorial expansion; the moral culpability of Xia Ji and the victimization of the ruler.

The case became a prominent cautionary tale in Chinese historiography, illustrating the collapse of ritual propriety during the Spring and Autumn period and the chaos wrought by a ruler's debauchery. It reinforced the "femme fatale" trope through Xia Ji and established a precedent for powerful states to intervene in weaker neighbors under the banner of punishing immoral rulers. The event is detailed in the "Zuo Zhuan" and influenced later political ethics on the limits of sovereign immunity.
