Asim Das v. Directorate of Enforcement (Mahadev Gaming App Case)

In January 2025, the Supreme Court of India delivered a significant ruling in the case of Asim Das v. Directorate of Enforcement, linked to the sprawling Mahadev Online Book betting scandal. Asim Das, an alleged associate of the app's promoters Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, challenged his arrest and the ED's investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The Mahadev App case involved illegal online betting, match-fixing, and the laundering of proceeds through a complex web of shell companies across India and offshore havens. The petition raised critical questions regarding the procedural validity of arrests and the retrospective application of PMLA schedules to online gaming offenses, given the murky legal status of skill versus chance games at the time of the alleged predicate offenses.
