Ankita Bhandari Murder Case

In September 2022, 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at Vanatara Resort in Uttarakhand, India, was murdered by the resort's owner, Pulkit Arya, and two employees, Ankit Gupta and Saurabh Bhaskar. The killing followed a dispute after Ankita refused to provide sexual services to a VIP guest. The perpetrators drowned her in a canal after assaulting her. The case sparked immediate public fury, partly because Pulkit Arya is the son of a prominent local politician, Vinod Arya, which led to accusations of political protection. Following massive protests, the state government handed the investigation to a Special Investigation Team. The Uttarakhand Police destroyed parts of the resort allegedly built illegally on forest land.

As of early 2026, the trial is ongoing in a fast-track court in Kotdwar. The three accused remain in judicial custody. The prosecution's case relies heavily on digital evidence, eyewitness testimonies from other resort employees, and the recovery of the victim's body. The Uttarakhand High Court is monitoring the investigation and trial progress.

The central dispute was whether Ankita Bhandari's murder was premeditated and linked to a forced prostitution racket, as the victim's family alleged, or an altercation that escalated accidentally. There was also intense controversy over the alleged initial police inaction and political pressure exerted by the main accused's family to derail the case. The illegal construction and operation of the resort on forest land became a secondary, significant point of contention.

The brutal murder ignited widespread protests across India, particularly in Uttarakhand, with demands for justice and a crackdown on illegal resorts and the exploitation of women in the tourism industry. It led to the demolition of the illegally constructed sections of Vanatara Resort and intensified public discourse on the nexus between politics, business, and crime. The case prompted the state government to form a SIT and commit to a fast-track trial, underscoring demands for swift justice in crimes against women and highlighting the dangers faced by female workers in isolated establishments.
