尚克林诉美国矿工联合会联合福利基金等案

Plaintiff Clayton Shanklin, a coal miner, brought this action under ERISA against the United Mine Workers of America 1974 Pension Trust after his application for disability pension benefits was denied. Shanklin suffered two work-related accidents in 2017 and also suffered from degenerative disc disease and chronic back pain. The UMWA denied his application, finding that he was not disabled as the result of a mine accident. The case was filed on August 22, 2022, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. On December 6, 2023, the court issued a memorandum opinion addressing cross-motions for summary judgment.

The court granted both parties' motions for summary judgment in part and denied them in part. The court found that de novo review applied because of UMWA's procedural and full-and-fair review violations, and further concluded that the denial would have been unreasonable if that standard had been applied. As a result, Shanklin won his disability benefits.

The central dispute was whether UMWA's denial of Shanklin's disability pension benefits was proper under ERISA. Specifically, whether the UMWA wrongfully concluded that no force or impact was involved in Shanklin's mine accident and unreasonably determined that no disability caused in part by a degenerative condition could qualify for benefits. The court also addressed whether de novo review applied due to UMWA's procedural and full-and-fair review violations.

The case reaffirmed that ERISA plan administrators must provide a full and fair review and cannot arbitrarily deny benefits based on unreasonable interpretations of their own standards. It clarified that a miner's disability caused by a mine accident that aggravates or combines with a preexisting degenerative condition can qualify for pension benefits, protecting miners with preexisting conditions from wrongful benefit denials.
