In the rain-slicked city of Ashwick, a down-and-out process server named Elias Vane witnesses a midnight exchange that ties the Mayor’s office to a corpse in the river. Branded a debtor and a madman by a collusion of City Hall, predatory law firms, and the Ashwick Municipal Court, Elias is trapped in a Kafkaesque garnishment of his sanity, his identity, and his past.
