Novel Summary
In a decaying coastal republic, a prosecutor’s greatest triumph—the execution of a man for the murder of a title examiner—unravels eight years later when a fraudulent deed reveals the true killers. Tormented by guilt and ensnared by the emotional blackmail of the real murderers, he embarks on a ritualistic self-sacrifice to haunt the very legal system he once served, discovering that the prison of a guilty conscience is far more absolute than any stone cell.
