Novel Summary
Victor Deverell, a nondescript clerk, applies for disability benefits, claiming amnesia and hallucinations. During his hearing before the Federal Security Board, his fragmented memories begin to mirror the crimes of the "Laughing Man," a serial killer from a decade past. As his psychological assessment deepens, the boundary between admiration and identity dissolves, leading him toward a terrifying collapse where his own testimony becomes the most dangerous lie.
