Novel Summary
In the authoritarian Republic of Carpathia, Helene Kovac is declared an unfit mother by the State Guardianship Bureau after a standardized risk algorithm flags her anxiety disorder. Her son, Darian, is seized and scheduled for reeducation placement. Rather than appeal, Helene begins to meticulously eliminate every official connected to the decision. Each death is staged as an administrative event: bodies are found seated at desks with a printed correction memo pinned to their chest, pointing out a clerical error in their own personnel files. The killings proceed in exact order of the organigram—caseworker, evaluator, supervisor, director. Detective Inspector Alaric Mirek, himself a victim of the Bureau's earlier downsizing, discovers the pattern while reviewing archived complaints. The horror lies not in bloodshed but in the chilling precision with which a mother's love has weaponized the very machinery of the state.
