Novel Summary
In the aftermath of a brutal theocratic regime's collapse, a meek archival clerk named Martin Ash is put on trial by an international tribunal for his role in authorizing the genocide of thousands. He argues he merely processed forms according to the law of the land, no different than a city enforcing a noise ordinance, but the prosecution reveals how his quiet piety became the most beautiful shell for the most horrific of evils.
