In the iron-forged State of Qin, a minor scribe is assigned to a seemingly routine case of a father accusing his son of unfilial conduct, a crime punishable by death. As he digs deeper, he uncovers the father's secret identity as a master lacquer artist obsessed with capturing ultimate human agony.
