Novel Summary
Years after witnessing his father's execution by a remote Appalachian valley community, lawyer Samuel Croft returns to Harkness to investigate a missing persons case. He discovers that beneath the village's archaic noise ordinance lies a centuries-old covenant of silence that protects a massacre of children. As childhood trauma drives him toward a final act of testimony, he confronts a primitive tribunal where collective indifference becomes the ultimate weapon.
