Case Summary
In the Jin State, Luan Ying, head of the powerful Luan clan and son of the deceased statesman Luan Yan, was framed by his mother Luan Qi and her lover, Xu Wu. They falsely accused him of rebellion, forcing Luan Ying into exile in Chu and Qi. Seeking to reclaim his position, Luan Ying secretly returned to Jin in 550 BC with Qi military support, fortifying himself in Quwo. Fan Xuanzi (Fan Gai), then chancellor, mobilized the state army, captured Quwo, and exterminated the entire Luan clan. Luan Ying was killed in the assault, and only his relative Yue Wangfu escaped. This marked the total eradication of a major noble lineage.

Status or Result
Luan Ying was killed during the military assault on Quwo. The Luan clan was officially declared guilty of treason and subjected to complete annihilation, resulting in the extermination of their lineage and the confiscation of their territories and properties by the state.

Key Disputes
The primary dispute centered on whether the accusations of rebellion were fabricated due to internal family strife and the personal vendetta of Fan Xuanzi. The legality and morality of exterminating an entire noble clan based on a family member's testimony were highly contested, highlighting the fragility of aristocratic alliances and the abuse of state power in political purges during the Spring and Autumn period.

Social Impact
The case symbolized the intensification of internecine struggles among Jin's noble houses, accelerating the decline of the ducal power and the consolidation of power by the six ministerial clans. It served as a stark precedent for the ruthless elimination of political rivals, contributing to the eventual partition of Jin into Han, Zhao, and Wei, and underscoring the era's brutal realpolitik regarding clan loyalty and state authority.
