Case Summary
On July 2, 2020, gangster Vikas Dubey and his associates ambushed a police team in Bikru village, Kanpur, killing eight policemen including Circle Officer Devendra Mishra. After an eight-day massive manhunt, Dubey was arrested in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on July 9. While being transported back to Kanpur on July 10, police claimed their vehicle met with an accident, Dubey snatched a weapon and attempted to flee, and was shot dead in an encounter on the outer ring road. His family and rights groups immediately alleged the killing was a staged extrajudicial execution. The Supreme Court constituted an inquiry commission led by retired Justice B.S. Chauhan, which later concluded the encounter was fake. Multiple police officers were charged with murder, and the case became a national flashpoint on police encounter killings.

Status or Result
