R. Ashoka Case

The R. Ashoka case involves a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. In early 2025, the Karnataka High Court directed the Lokayukta police to complete an investigation into allegations that Ashoka illegally denotified government land and granted fraudulent building plan approvals during his tenure as Urban Development Minister between 2019 and 2020. The case, originating from a private complaint, alleges that Ashoka misused his official position to de-reserve a prime civic amenity site in Bengaluru, causing significant financial loss to the state exchequer and facilitating illegal construction by private developers. Ashoka has denied all charges, claiming the case is politically motivated. The Supreme Court subsequently stayed the investigation in April 2025 following his petition.

As of 2025, the Supreme Court of India has granted an interim stay on the Karnataka High Court's order directing a criminal investigation. The matter remains pending final adjudication regarding the scope and legality of the probe.

The central dispute is whether R. Ashoka abused his ministerial authority to illegally alter land use designations and sanction building plans in violation of the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, or whether the charges are a politically orchestrated vendetta.

The case intensified the political battle between the BJP and the ruling Congress party in Karnataka, sparking widespread public debate over corruption in urban planning and the politicization of anti-graft agencies.
