Case Summary
During the reign of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Xu Xuan, the nephew of the powerful eunuch Xu Huang, served as the Magistrate of Xiapi. Desiring the daughter of the late Runan Administrator Li Gao, Xu Xuan proposed marriage but was refused. Enraged, Xu Xuan led men to forcibly seize the girl, murdering her with arrows in a cruel manner. Li Gao sought justice through higher authorities. When Huang Fu became the Inspector of Donghai, he took up the case. Despite threats and pressure from eunuch factions demanding Xu Xuan's release, Huang Fu remained resolute, personally adjudicating the matter and sentencing Xu Xuan to execution for his heinous crimes.

Status or Result
Huang Fu, as the presiding official, found Xu Xuan guilty of murder and abuse of power. Despite receiving an imperial edict (likely coerced by the eunuchs) demanding Xu Xuan be sent to the capital, Huang Fu executed him immediately, displaying his corpse publicly to show that the law was supreme. Huang Fu was subsequently sentenced to penal servitude for defying the edict.

Key Disputes
The central conflict revolved around the clash between local judicial authority and the overwhelming political influence of the eunuch faction. Huang Fu, determined to uphold the law, had to confront the power of Xu Huang, who could influence the imperial court, turning the case into a test of whether justice could prevail over privilege.

Social Impact
The execution greatly alarmed the powerful eunuch clique and was celebrated by the gentry and common people as an act of fearless justice. It exposed the tyranny of eunuch relatives and the extent of political corruption during the period. Huang Fu’s act of sacrificing his own safety for legal integrity became a celebrated example of an incorruptible "upright official" in Chinese history.
