The Author's Debt

After finishing a brutal crime novel about a defense contractor who loses everything to a corrupt procurement system, reclusive author Julian Cross is confronted by his own protagonist, Elias Thorne, standing in his rain-soaked study. The character demands that Julian rewrite the ending because the fictional conspiracy is unfolding in the real Aurelian Republic, and unless the narrative is changed, Elias will be murdered by the state the next morning. As Julian digs deeper, he discovers his manuscript didn't just predict the scandal—it somehow caused it, binding his own buried sins to a cycle of violence that only a final act of authorial sacrifice can break.
