The Manager's Conscience

Words: 3145 · Source Novel:: The Sympathy That Bled

Elena's ghostly presence intensifies. She begins appearing to Marcus in mirrors, whispering in his ear during board meetings, and manipulating small objects to unnerve him. Paralleling this, a wrongful death lawsuit is filed by her grieving younger sister, Claire, represented by a tenacious attorney named Jordan Hale. The legal proceedings echo the original Kornegay case, with allegations of premises liability and negligent security. Elena narrates the depositions with savage satisfaction, guiding Claire's strategy through dreams and intuitions. But Marcus is not the monster she expected: through her spectral observations, she witnesses his private torment, his crumbling marriage, his guilt over a sister he lost in a similar tragedy years ago. The reader's sympathy begins to splinter—Elena's revenge seems both justified and cruel. She mocks this hesitation directly: "You think he suffers beautifully, don't you? You think his pain redeems him. Wait until you see what pain really looks like." The chapter closes with Marcus attempting suicide, and Elena's ghost doing nothing to stop him. He survives, but barely.
