The Court of Unmarked Graves
Words: 3102 · Source Novel:: The Wraith's Docket
At the smoke-choked site of the burnt facility, The Bailiff corners Elian, offering him a perverse deal: a "summary judgment" to join the syndicate and control the records of the dead, or be erased. Elian refuses, reciting the names of the disappeared his father and Tigre among them, turning his own memory into testimony. The Bailiff hesitates, a crack in the procedural armor. Federal agents, led by a whistleblower from Argos’s past, close in, and The Bailiff vanishes into the desert haze. Hassell is exposed, but the jurisdiction is a sieve; The Docket simply migrates. In the aftermath, Elian stands at the border wall, holding a binder of salvaged names that hold no legal force. The story ends not with a verdict, but with a long, quiet shot of the vast, sun-bleached land where law ends and the desert of the forgotten begins, a perpetual, silent trial.
The Ledger of Vultures
Words: 1523 · Source Novel:: The Wraith's Docket
Hunted by a Docket agent known only as "The Bailiff," Elian breaks into a defunct courthouse to find the master ledger linking local officials to the syndicate. There, he encounters Thom Argos, a disbarred civil rights lawyer haunted by the original Tigre v. Hassell lawsuit he lost years ago. Argos lives in the dusty law library, a ghost himself, surrounded by appeals for the dead. He explains The Docket doesn't just kill; it creates a parallel, perverted legal "record" for each target, mocking the justice that failed them. To survive, Elian must let Argos file a "stay of execution" deep inside The Docket's encrypted court, a virtual confessional where the wicked rule in robes.

Branded a delinquent runaway, Elian barely escapes a squad car that tries to drive him into the desert. He goes underground, aided by Mira, a mute archivist at the border patrol holding facility who preserves the files of the "ghost detainees"—hundreds of migrants logged into a system that legally erases them. She shows him Tigre's file; he was already legally dead on paper before the bullet.
