Elena Thorne, a jaded immigration lawyer in the crumbling Commonwealth of Acastia, reluctantly takes on the pro bono case of Toshkhua v. Smith et al. Andrej Toshkhua, a stateless performance artist, has been erased from the Veridian Detention Center records; the government claims he was deported, but the presented Notice to Appear is a clumsy forgery. Thorne obtains a corrupted security fragment showing Toshkhua being led into a laundry corridor by a figure in a mirrored mask. Obsessively cross-referencing missing detainees, she discovers they all vanished on dates corresponding to full moons and were last documented in the same blind spot. Her investigation leads her to an abandoned textile mill, where she finds a grotesque installation titled “The Vanishing Point”—a wax tableau of the missing arranged as a mock courtroom, with Toshkhua cast as the judge. A gallery placard bears the name Julian Croft. Thorne files a motion to preserve the evidence, but her obsession begins to estrange her from her firm and her family, who warn that she is chasing ghosts.
