The Mouth of the Gilded Trap

Words: 2347 · Source Novel:: Beneath the Lancet

Seventeen-year-old Leo Trammell, fleeing a botched foster-care placement, scales the iron fence of Blackwood Estate on a rumor of food left for the poor. He tumbles into an elaborate night-time hunt—drunken magnates in tailored camouflage chasing a man in tattered clothes. Leo witnesses the kill, makes eye contact with the host, Philip Lancaster, and runs. That same night, a body is dumped outside the city morgue with a note that reads, “An accident.” Dr. Elara Vance begins her external examination, noting the strangely ritualistic abrasions.
