Defect in the Code

Words: 3182 · Source Novel:: The Latent Verdict

Clara covertly investigates the Tribunal’s origins with the help of Samuel Mitchell, her former plaintiff attorney. They trace a network of vigilante coders and disgraced law enforcement officers operating out of an abandoned courthouse. Shockingly, a central architect is revealed to be an ex-associate of Margaret Dunn, who claimed to have been defrauded by Clara herself years ago in a sealed juvenile proceeding. The narrative fractures into flashbacks, E. Lockhart style, revealing that a young Clara once embezzled from a family trust—a secret she had utterly buried. The haunting twist is not that Clara is innocent, but that the algorithm specifically reclassified her old, legally-expunged act as “active latency.” The very system her lawsuit birthed has retroactively annulled her safety, marking her as a target for the next purge.
