Acquitted by Sympathy
Words: 2876 · Source Novel:: Mercy Kills Twice
In the aftermath, Dr. Vane reads the final entry. The ghost understands now: it was never a separate entity avenging a client, but Mezrano's own guilt-warped consciousness trying to execute itself. The entire revenge narrative was a trap for the reader's compassion—every ounce of sympathy poured into the story empowered the destructive alter to annihilate the original personality. The "murder" was a suicide orchestrated by the very people who felt sorry for the apparent victim. The diary's last line, scrawled in jagged letters, reads: "You killed me with your kindness. I was the accused all along." The narrative leaves Vane (and the reader) holding the instrument of a death they unknowingly cheered for, making the process of revenge infinitely more damning than its hollow end.
The Defendant's Confession
Words: 2843 · Source Novel:: Mercy Kills Twice
Dr. Vane breaks through the trance and uncovers the clinical truth: the real Edwin Whitworth is alive and catatonic in Thornwood, having been assaulted by Mezrano during a psychotic break. Damian Mezrano, consumed with guilt, developed dissociative identity disorder, creating a vengeful ghost-persona of the man he had nearly killed. The journal is Mezrano's own delusional handwriting, a suicide note written across multiple identities. As Vane races to Mezrano's office, the diary describes the lawyer finally putting a gun to his head, while the phantom narrator declares triumph. The chapter concludes with the ghost's horrifying realization that it is speaking from the body that is about to pull the trigger.
Retribution in the Mirror
Words: 2746 · Source Novel:: Mercy Kills Twice
Mezrano's life implodes. He sees Whitworth's face in every reflection, his firm collapses, and he is reduced to a raving wreck barricaded in his office. Dr. Vane witnesses his persecution through the ghost's eyes, feeling righteous satisfaction. The revenge seems complete and just. However, the diary's narrative fractures: entries appear in two distinct handwritings, and a hidden diagram shows a man attacking his own reflection. The ghost, now calling itself "Edwin," screams that it must erase the monster Mezrano, but its rage begins to bleed with an inexplicable self-loathing.
The Flaw in the Testimony
Words: 2342 · Source Novel:: Mercy Kills Twice
The specter recounts the trial, painting Mezrano as a venal manipulator who hid exculpatory evidence. Yet subtle inconsistencies plague the narrative—dates that drift, a key document that bears Whitworth's forged signature, and a witness described as dead who later appears alive. Dr. Vane, now half-entranced, investigates Mezrano and finds the lawyer tormented by poltergeist phenomena. Each act of sympathy from Vane (and by extension the reader) seems to tighten the noose around Mezrano. The ghost exults, but in a slip of its own memory, it recalls a moment of strangling, not being strangled, before hastily correcting itself.
The Deposition of a Dead Man
Words: 1892 · Source Novel:: Mercy Kills Twice
Dr. Eleanor Vane, a forensic psychiatrist at Thornwood Asylum, receives a bloodstained journal belonging to the late Edwin Whitworth, a plaintiff who allegedly killed himself after losing a malpractice suit against attorney Damian Mezrano. The journal addresses the reader directly, begging for belief and describing in visceral detail how Mezrano deliberately sabotaged the case. As Dr. Vane reads, the ink seems to bleed, and the ghost's voice grows stronger, insisting that the reader's swelling sympathy is giving it power to walk again. The first chapter ends with a whisper from the pages: "You are the jury now."
